Merci, Capet
when violin technique and metaphysics collide..
I opened a different edition of an etudes book and the introductory preface was so motivating, uplifting and philosophic.
"it is necessary to consider the role of the right hand vis-à-vis the left hand, like that of the Soul vis-à-vis the Body" -Lucien Capet1 (1873-1928)
Capet’s analogies are intrinsic to his guidance; there’s no doing away with them. Practicality, technicality-dryly succinct is a different abode.
Yet so much more than what he has captured rushes out like a gust of freed wind. The briefness with which he states the profound is disarming. He has unified the why and the how of violin playing. His passionate convictions are arresting. Overpowering.
I imagine, these pages contain something more than an obsession. They are the only lasting evidence for a type of devotion not often talked about.
The pursuit of art, of an ideal..for the love of it. Not because that perfection exists, but because that love must be taught and freed, to serve..
I look on these pages with new eyes. Such devotion can be nurtured.
That triad of wonder, worship, and precision is always fruitful.
